Generator

  • Group - Limits the ParticleFX object's interactions to a specifically named group, unless set to <default>, in which case it's affected by everything in the scene.
  • Birth Rate - Sets the number of particles being spawned in conjunction with Generate By.
  • Generate By - Sets how many particles are emitted.
    • Sec - Emitter emits the Birth rate number of particles per second.

    • Speed - Scales the number of particles emitted by the speed of the emitter. Useful for thrusters, salt shakers etc.
    • Collision Event- Emit particles when the emitter's pivot point collides with a CollisionFX object set to Event.
    • Wind - Emits a set number of particles when the emitter experiences wind above a certain threshold defined by the Threshold value in the Motion tab.
    • Wind Speed - As above, but the speed of the wind affects the number of particles emitted.
  • Nozzle - Controls the shape of the emitter.
    • Box - A box, the size of which is defined below.
    • Sphere - A sphere, the size of which is defined below.
    • Object-Vertices
    • Object-Normal
    • Object-Surface
    • Object-Line - Emits particles from the relevant part of the mesh. The particles initial direction is from the Center Position in the Etc tab.
    • Parent-emitter - Emits particles from the particles emitted from a parent emitter.
    • Parent-emitter(end) - Emits particles from the particles emitted from a parent emitter when those particles die.
    • Parent-Collision - Emits particles from the particles emitted from a parent emitter when those particles experience a collision.
    • Child-Pivots - Emits particles from the pivots of child objects.
  • Size Effect - Controls how particles are affected when the emitter has a change of size.
  • Key Effect - Controls how particles are created when the emitter has a keyframe.
  • Generator Size - Determines the size of the emitter.
  • Particle Limit - Limits the total number of particles.
  • Fixed - Toggles the ability to start particles at a specific frame.
  • Start Frame - Chooses that frame.

Particle

  • Particle Weight- Sets the weight of each particle.
  • +- Sets an interval within which the weight will vary per particle.
  • Particle Size - Sets the size of each particle.
  • Particle Resistance - Sets the air and wind resistance of each particle.
  • Life Time(frame) - Sets the lifetime of each particle in frames.
  • Fixed Random - Makes the Random settings fixed for looping.
  • Show ID - Displays each particles ID next to it.
  • Show Size - Shows the size of each particle.
  • Output Size - Allows the particle size to be non-1.
  • Show Particles - Toggles display of the particles in the scene.

Motion

  • World Coordinates - Use the values below in world coordinates.
  • Velocity - Scales the overall velocity.
  • Velocity(m/s)X/Y/Z - Set the particle's initial velocity.
  • Target - Shoot the particles towards a selected target.
  • Explosion - Shoot the particles away from the pivot point at this speed.
  • Vibration(m/s) - Shoot each particle in a random direction at up to this speed.
  • Vibration(min) - Sets a minimum speed for Vibration.
  • Threshold1/2(m/s) - These set speed thresholds outside which the particle will shoot out without a vibration, but within which it has vibration added. Think of a hose which dribbles out predictably till it is turned right up, and then sprays out in different directions. If Generate by>Wind is selected, this sets the miminum threshold for that.

Etc

  • Gravity(m/s^2) - Allows you to set a gravity setting just for this emitter.
  • Center Position - Allows you to offset the center used for settings like Explosion from the emitter's pivot point.
  • Position Blur - Randomises the initial position of the particle by the velocity.
  • Parent Motion - Determines how much of the particle's initial motion is controlled by it's parent's motion.
  • Max Speed - Limits the particles' speed.
  • Loop Frame - Loops the particle emission after this number of frames.

Rotation

  • Rotation - Sets the rotation and size behaviour of the particle as it moves.
    • None - No change.
    • Align to Path - Align the particle's rotation to the path it is moving.
  • Random Rotation&Scale - Pops up a requester to set rotation, scale and spin values.

Interaction

  • Self-Interaction - Controls how particles from the same emitter affect each other. This needs a Size value larger than 0 to work.
    • None - No effect.
    • Push - Pushes other particles away.
    • Bounce - Bounces other particles away.
    • Drag - Pulls other particles along its direction.
    • Crowd - Pulls other particles to itself.
  • Interaction - As above but with particles from other emitters.
  • Force - Controls the strength of the interaction.
  • Viscosity - This affects the amount of resistance particles put up to the force.
  • Detect Interaction - Toggles the effects.

File

  • Load Motion - Loads a particle motion (.pfx).
  • Save Motion - Saves the particle motion.
  • Clear Motion - Clears the loaded motion or a calculated motion from the particles.
  • Update - Refreshes the motion of particles should that not occur when a change is made to the settings.
  • Copy - Allows you to copy settings to another emitter.
  • Paste - Allows you to paste the settings copied from another emitter.
  • Save - Saves the emitter settings for use in another scene.
  • Load - Loads the emitter settings.
  • Playback Mode - Controls how a saved motion is played on this emitter.
    • Normal - Plays back at frame 0.
    • Key - The motion will be restarted every time a key is encountered.
    • Parent-key - As above but using its parent's keys.
    • Parent Particles - The particles are emitted from the parent emitter's particles. The size of the parent particles scales the motion, so 0 size will make the motion invisible.
    • Parent Particles(end) - As above, but only played at the end of the parent particle's life.
    • Parent Recorded CP - This uses the Record CP option in the parent object. The particle motion will be played at collision points on the parent.
  • Playback Speed - Controls the playback speed of the motion.

EditFX

  • Undo - Undoes the last edit of a particle.
  • Edittool - Activates the EditFX tool.
  • Edit node - Numerically choose the particle to be edited.
  • Edit Frame - Allows you to choose the range to be edited.

    • Before - Affect frames only before.
    • Current - Affect only the current frame.
  • Edit axis - Specifies which axis is to be edited and how.
  • Fix Edit Start - If this is active, the edit will be faded smoothly from the current frame to the position at this frame. If control is pressed, this fading is linear.
  • Fix Edit End - as above, but fading out.
  • Edit size - Controls the editing area of influence.
  • Delete - Deletes the currently selected particle from the current frame onwards.

    • Make Path (Align to Path) - Creates a Null which transforms the current selected particle's path into keyed movement including rotation.
    • Read Path - Reads the motion from the selected item to the selected particle. To do this from other meshes/nulls, you should open the ParticleFX panel from the FXBrowser as this panel will remain open when you select the item you want to copy from. If you do it from the Properties Panel, the ParticleFX panel in the panel will close.
    • Apply All - Applies the last modification to particles using the edit tool to all particles within the Editsize falloff (if on, or all particles if this is off).
    • Clone Particle - Clones the selected particle in place, so you'll need to move the selected particle to see the clone.
